Mobile Learning Breathes Fresh Air into Outdated Education Systems

I recently read an interesting article on the views of 17 year old Nikhil Gupta, author of the book One Size Does Not Fit All: A Student’s Assessment of School, on the flaws in American education and the need for change to foster students’ passions and interests. It made me think of our own mission as a mobile solutions provider.

Our business function is to create innovative mobile solutions. But our larger aim is to simplify lives – for learning, communication, training, enablement or supporting innovation. With DRONA Mobile, we have tried to create a simple and easy to use platform that has the potential of becoming as common a given in people’s lives as pen and paper. We want DRONA Mobile to not only work as a tool for disseminating information and knowledge but also create an upward flow of ideas and innovation. It should become a resource pool of information on which new knowledge is created. Additionally, DRONA’s scope is not limited to organizations but extends to society in general.

To some degree, I agree with Nikhil’s thoughts on contemporary education. The scope for original thought is restricted in schools that are supposedly meant to nurture children’s minds and expand their horizon. At the same time, I also observe many new age institutions venturing into new modes of learning supported by technology and application-based teaching. The pace of change may be slower here compared to other industries but it’s in the air.

iPads in classroomsMany schools in developed countries have introduced iPads into classrooms for better learning. According to a study funded by the Department of Education in 2011, remarkable vocabulary improvement of up to 31% was observed in elementary school students after only 2 weeks of using an educational gaming app. There’s successful mobile learning for you – using one of the fastest growing mobility trends – gamification.

Mobile learning is as powerful in developing countries and perhaps, more impacting. Let’s take the case of an unsupervised mobile learning exploratory study on rural children that was conducted in 2010 in two villages of Uttar Pradesh by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University. Cell phones with simple mobile apps that targeted English as a second language were distributed to a group of children from differing castes and economical backgrounds. The observations of this study conducted over 28 weeks were enlightening.

Participating children tried to learn from the cell phones in every possible free moment – in short breaks between daily chores and family responsibilities, nap time, when elders were resting, etc. Moreover, the children shared their learnings with friends and even mentored them. The mobile learning exercise even broke societal boundaries of caste and gender as children took each other’s help in playing the learning games. It’s heartening to share that these relationships continued even after the exercise was over.

Learning is about opening minds and mobile learning is currently the most powerful medium driving it. More schools are adopting mobile devices to support lesson concepts, provide reference material, and improve teacher-student communication. These efforts will eventually improve the education system by enabling students to share their thoughts and ideas, learn about their own capabilities and true passions, and discover their direction in life.

DRONA Mobile Welcomes 2013 with New Updates, Features and Goodies

new DRONA Mobile updates in 2013Off with the old, on with the new? Not really. If you have something great going, you don’t ditch it. You enhance it and make it more relevant to new expectations and needs. That’s what we’ve done with DRONA Mobile. Year 2013 will see DRONA Mobile helping enterprises sharpen up their communication, learning, training, sales, marketing, and engagement initiatives with the help of new features, updates and free goodies.

Mobile content sourcing

One of the biggest challenges for mobile learning protagonists is the availability of quality mobile content. While most organizations, institutes, and schools already have learning content in random formats in their resource libraries, it is not optimized for mobile delivery. This is a challenge in terms of time, effort, technological support and skill. Wouldn’t it be easier to reuse this content for mobile delivery “automatically”? Read on to learn how the latest version of DRONA Mobile helps with this problem.

In the new DRONA Mobile version, admin users can create videos, presentations, pdfs, events, surveys, bulletins, quizzes, and more from existing content such as:

  • RSS feeds
  • Webpage URL
  • Video links
  • Audio files
  • Content package from Marketplace

Newsletters from RSS feeds & web pages

As a DRONA Mobile user, you know that you can create presentations via the management console that can be published as slides, newsletters, etc. The new DRONA management console allows admin users to take an RSS feed and break it into single content items, each of which can then be published as a newsletter (single slide). If you have a website or blog with content that you’d like to share via DRONA, all you need to do is source it to the RSS feed.

Similarly, if you want to share an article on a web page, all you do is specify the web URL in the management console and DRONA will clip the article content and send it to users as new content.

Of course, all content sharing is subject to copyright laws.

Mobile video

Video is one of the most effective forms of communication. This point has been proven many times over. In current versions of DRONA Mobile, admin users upload video from a PC. Each video is optimized for mobile delivery and made available in formats compatible with different mobile operating systems. The process of uploading videos can become cumbersome if your campaign involves multiple video files.

The latest DRONA Mobile version simplifies video uploads. Most companies have a repository for their communication, learning or training video modules. These can be accessed via an internal or external web URL. DRONA admin users can upload videos by specifying the web URL in the management console. The video will automatically be converted to compatible formats and optimized for mobile delivery.

Audio files

The latest DRONA Mobile version supports audio so you can share podcasts with users with ease. Just upload the files and they will be converted and optimized for mobile delivery to Android, iOS (iPhone and iPad) or BlackBerry device users.

Marketplace

New admin users of DRONA Mobile can get a head start by using content from the Marketplace. A new concept, Marketplace will host free and licensed content that admin users can access and deliver to their channel users. For example, our content partner Bizpunditz could be accessible via the Marketplace, along with videos, presentations, survey samples, and other content.

New quiz type – Multiple Response Questions (MRQ)

Like it’s never just black or white, some questions have multiple answers. The new DRONA supports the MRQ format for quizzes, questionnaires, surveys, examinations, you name it. Now, you have another format to make campaigns more effective for administrators, managers, examiners, and other inspectors.

A whole lot more will be happening on DRONA Mobile this year. Watch this space for exciting new updates.
